Florida has more seniors per capita than almost any other state — and the average funeral here costs $9,000–$13,000. Final expense insurance is a small whole life policy designed specifically to cover those costs so your family isn't left scrambling to pay the bills while they're grieving. No medical exam required, premiums never increase, and coverage never expires.
Final expense insurance — also called burial insurance or funeral insurance — is a small whole life policy typically ranging from $5,000 to $25,000. It's designed for seniors ages 50–85 who want to make sure their end-of-life costs are covered without burdening their family. Unlike traditional life insurance, there's no medical exam and approval is fast — often same day.
Most Florida seniors between ages 50 and 85 qualify — even with health conditions that would disqualify them from traditional life insurance. There are three types of final expense policies:
Full death benefit from day one. Requires answering a few health questions but no medical exam. Best rates for seniors in reasonably good health.
For seniors with some health issues. Full benefit after 2–3 years; partial benefit in the first years. Slightly higher premiums than level benefit.
Guaranteed acceptance for ages 50–85 regardless of health history. No health questions, no exam. Higher premiums and a 2-year waiting period, but everyone qualifies.
Premiums are based on your age, gender, health, and the coverage amount you choose. Here are general monthly estimates for a $10,000 policy:
| Age | Female | Male |
|---|---|---|
| 55 | ~$28/mo | ~$35/mo |
| 65 | ~$42/mo | ~$55/mo |
| 70 | ~$58/mo | ~$75/mo |
| 75 | ~$80/mo | ~$105/mo |
