Open enrollment is the one time each year when you can sign up for, change, or drop your health insurance plan. Make the wrong choice and you could be stuck with a plan that doesn't cover your doctors, leaves you with a massive deductible, or costs far more than it should. Here are 10 tips to help you get it right.
The ACA marketplace open enrollment typically runs November 1 – January 15. Missing this window means you cannot get coverage until the next year unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) due to a life event like marriage, birth, or job loss.
Your current plan's premiums, deductibles, and network can change every year. Always compare your renewal plan against new options — you may find better coverage at a lower price.
Bronze plans have the lowest premiums but highest out-of-pocket costs. Silver plans qualify for cost-sharing reductions if your income qualifies. Gold and Platinum have higher premiums but lower costs when you use care. Choose based on how often you use healthcare.
Before enrolling, verify that your primary care doctor, specialists, and preferred hospital are in the plan's network. Out-of-network care can cost 2–3x more or may not be covered at all.
Each plan has a formulary — a list of covered drugs. If you take regular medications, check that they are on the formulary and what tier they fall under. Tier 1 generics are cheapest; specialty drugs can cost hundreds per month.
Don't just look at the monthly premium. Add up your deductible, copays, and out-of-pocket maximum. A plan with a $200/month premium and a $6,000 deductible may cost more than a $350/month plan with a $1,500 deductible if you use healthcare regularly.
If your household income is between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level, you may qualify for premium tax credits that significantly reduce your monthly cost. An independent agent can run the numbers for you at no charge.
High-deductible health plans (HDHPs) paired with a Health Savings Account (HSA) let you save pre-tax dollars for medical expenses. If you're generally healthy, this combination can save you thousands per year.
Most ACA marketplace plans do not include dental or vision for adults. These are typically purchased as separate add-on plans. I can bundle them with your health coverage to keep things simple.
An independent agent shops multiple carriers on your behalf at no cost to you. We get paid by the insurance company, not by you. You get expert guidance, plan comparisons, and someone in your corner if you ever have a claim issue.
